Should I Turn My Computer Off at Night?
There are several reasons why it may be a good idea to turn off your computer at night. For some, it may not matter whether the computer is on or off. Most newer computers have a sleep mode when they are inactive which doesn’t use much power. However, in businesses or at home, it may be wise to turn off the computer at night for security reasons.
Sleep mode on computers still uses some electricity, and the most economic thing to do is to turn off the computer at night, especially if you’re looking to reduce costs. Saving electricity also has environmental benefits. Older computers may not have the sleep feature and have less efficient power supplies, so you might want to turn them off to save money. Obviously, laptops, which run on a battery, will have a longer battery life if they are turned off when not in use.
For most the idea of saving money and reducing your environmental impact is high in the priority list, now PremierePC can help you achieve both.
How Much Can I Save?
For example, let’s say you mid-grade home or office workstation and an LCD monitor or two, and you leave them on 24/7. That’s about 78 watts x 24 hours x 365 days/yr = 683,280 watt-hours, or 683.28 kilowatt-hours.
If you’re paying $0.20 per kWh, you’re paying $136.66 a year to run your computer. Multiply that by the number of computers you have in your office, you start to see why it is wise to turn you computers off.
For the average office which normally runs from 7AM to 7PM we can turn the systems down for 12 hours, reducing your energy costs by half or average savings of $68.33 per computer per year.
How We Can Help
The technology to turn your computer off automatically has been around awhile, but the technology to turn it back on and have it ready for you when you come into work, is something a little more recent.
For our ProSupport customers, we are able to not only monitor the health of your computers, but we can also power them down overnight and have them powered back on for you the next morning, thereby saving money by not having them running 24/7.
This is a value added service for our ProSupport clients that will cost nothing to use. An onsite visit may be required to set your system up to use this, but this will not count against your monthly onsite visit.
Results vary from client to client based and based on your hardware, but this service will reduce your energy consumption and save some of that hard earned dough.
